Exquisite silk shawls – Saving Afghanistan’s Silk – Artizan Sarai’s “Silk Expressions”

http://artizansarai.com Afghanistan’s silk trade is in danger of being lost, but one city is struggling to keep it alive. Artizan Sarai’s “Silk Expressions” exquisite shawls are hand woven by a cooperative of 100 Afghan women in rural villages near Herat.

They work eight hours daily as widows or heads of their households to produce only 5 shawls per day using simple wooden looms. The co-op grows its own silkworms and feeds them mulberry leaves for high quality silk thread. Cocoons are spun into spools of soft fine silk thread and then naturally dyed into gorgeous colors. The unique shawls capture the beauty of Afghanistan and the ancient Silk Road.
